Resume Tips

Presentation and Format:

  • Comply with submission requirements.
  • Try to keep your resume simple, use common programs such as Word and save it as a .doc file.
  • Use easy to read fonts and sizes.
  • Try to deter using images.
  • Keep your resume in a chronological order; list your current job first.

Personal Details:

  • Include your name, contact number, postal address and email address.
  • Do not advise your work phone number, unless you have a private line to use.
  • Retain a professional voicemail message.

Career Objective:

  • If you choose to include a career objective, be sure to alter your statement according to the job you are applying for.

Technical Skills Summary:

  • List your major technical skills and relate them to the job you are applying for.

Professional Experience:

  • Include as much information as possible about your current job.
  • Be sure to list the companies, name, your length of employment and the position you held.

Job Summary:

  • Emphasise your achievements.
  • Use examples on how you contributed to your employer's business.

Education:

  • Detail depends on the relevance between your qualifications and your work experience.
  • List the name of your qualification, the date you commenced and graduated, the institution you attended and your major(if applicable).
  • Include any scholarships or awards that you may have received in any of your education.

References and Referees:

  • For your references you should include people who know you well and who will confirm details on your resume.
  • Be sure to check with the person before you list them as a referee.
  • You may like to inform your referees about the position and remind them of your skills.

Do's and Don'ts:

  • Check spelling and grammar.
  • Don't use different font sizes and italics.
  • Don't use pictures.
  • Don't hand write on paper or cover sheet.
